Our little city has made it to the biggest stage in professional basketball. The Thunder is in the FINALS!!!!It’s hard to believe just a few short years ago this team was 3-29 with a young up and comer and an unknown coach. Now they have two first team All-NBA players, a Sixth Man of the Year, and An All-Defensive first teamer all on the same roster. These are exciting times for the city, and I personally could not be any more pumped up.
All of this excitement got me thinking about historic moments in Oklahoma sports. If the Thunder wins the championship would this be the biggest thing to happen in Oklahoma sports history? Until the Thunder came to town this was largely a football state. Football is probably still king around here, but what the Thunder is trying to do is pretty special. Would a Thunder championship be bigger than the Game of the Century in ’71? Would it be bigger than the Sooner National Championship game of 2000 (which still has the highest local ratings of any program, sports or not, in history)? How about Barry Sanders 1988 season which was just recently reaffirmed to be the best college football season ever played?
I don’t know where a Thunder championship would rank, but I do know history is in the making and we should all enjoy this ride because not many teams get this far (just ask Minnesota or Cleveland). We are witnessing history and this small market team is making a big market splash. 2 years ago LeBron James was asked how many championships they would win in Miami and he responded, “not two, not three, not four, not five, not six….” I noticed he left out zero so here’s to hoping KD, Russ, The Beard, and IBLOCKA send the Heat back with as many rings as they had before. ZERO. Leave us some comments and let us know where you think this Thunder season ranks in Oklahoma sports history…..Oh yeah one more thing……THUNDER UP!!!
